A worker who is currently an active member of an automatic enrolment pension scheme should still continue to contribute to their pension when in receipt of SMP at the required minimum levels, usually 5% employee and 3% employer.
The Employee contribution is based on their SMP amount which is classed as pensionable, and the Employer contribution should be based on their notional salary, ie, the basic salary they were receiving prior to SMP.
When submitting contributions via PensionSync, we check that the contributions are at the required level as per their pensionable pay, and if it falls below the minimum, a validation error may occur.
